Machiya 町家 (translates in Japanese to townhouse and shop) is an emulation of Japanese and Australian design concepts. With the use of ‘sho sugi ban’ locally charred cypress for the ground level. Meets the ripples of an Aussie favourite, silver corrugated sheeting for the upper level. The design is passive, a small footprint and economically minded with a modest budget. This has allowed ample outdoor space for native plants, an edible garden and creative development in the future. The shop element refers to a home studio, purposely designed as a Shiatsu clinic which is separate to the main house.

“Machiya was designed by architect Toby Dean as his very first residential project. We approached Toby with the original idea and creatively collaborated to develop a home. Mick from MJS Built was approached once plans and ideas had been established. Mick brought Machiya to life with great experience, knowledge and connections.”
